Hi, I’m John Moody – software professional by day, theologian by night.
I’ve been writing code and architecting systems (and leading teams that write code and architect systems) for the past 29 years.
I taught myself to program in BASIC as an eight-year-old using a Commodore VIC-20 (4K RAM!), and I’ve never stopped learning since.
I’ve designed systems for the US Navy, the Port of Seattle, and numerous startups as a consultant.
As a CTO, I built a remote engineering department from scratch of forty people from around the world (literally – every continent except Antarctica was represented). The systems we built together powered the text messaging needs of a US presidential campaign and multiple political organizations through two election cycles.
I currently serve as an engineering manager at Klaviyo, a Boston-based marketing automation firm. I lead a team of bright engineers building out our in-house email delivery capacity.
In this space, I write about lessons learned over 30 years in the tech industry. I have strong opinions (which I’ll point out are not necessarily those of my employer). I also write here about my other great love – faith and theology.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree (major: religious studies) from Palm Beach Atlantic College (now University), and a Master of Theology degree from Edinburgh Theological Seminary.
Over the last 30 years, I have served as a bivocational pastor, college instructor, youth minister, and adult Christian education teacher. My passion is for exegetical Bible teaching and preaching.
I have been married to Naomi for 29 years and have four children. Only the 15-year-old is at home – the others have flown the coop! We live in lovely Medical Lake, Washington, just outside of Spokane.
